Innovate for Impact: Designing Sustainable Pavilions

Queen's University Belfast is excited to invite aspiring engineers and architects from Kenya & Uganda to participate in an engaging design competition. This competition offers a unique opportunity to unleash your creativity and problem-solving skills while addressing real-world challenges in public space design.

Objective

Design a small pavilion for a public space that serves a specific function. It could be a coffee dock, a marketplace for organic farm produce, or a hub for exchanging health incentives information – the possibilities are endless.

Points you may consider:

Functionality:

A pavilion must be functional and practical for its designated purpose, facilitating activities like coffee service, product display, or information exchange. Some ideas are - a counter for transactions, ample seating space for visitors, and sufficient storage to accommodate necessary equipment or supplies.

Adaptability and Resilience:

Consider designing the pavilion to adapt to various environmental conditions, including sun, rain, and wind. You could incorporate features like adjustable shading, waterproofing, and wind barriers to enhance comfort and usability.

Creativity and Risk-Taking:

Extra credit will be given for innovative design concepts and taking calculated risks in your approach.
Think outside the box to create visually striking and functionally efficient pavilions.

Submission Guidelines:

Design and construct a small-scale paper and tape model of your pavilion design. Provide a brief description of your design concept, explaining its purpose, key features, and design rationale. Submissions should include one clear photograph and a 360-degree video of the model from different angles for evaluation purposes. This video cannot be more than 30 seconds.
